日本社会に長い間暮らしてきた人間として強く思うのは、「自己を客観視しない価値観」が問題だと思う。失業したり、なにかひどい目にあったら、それが直接「自分自身の価値の喪失」と捉える文化がこの国にはある。仕事や学校、そのようなものに自己を同化させて、そこでの評価が絶対となっている。

自殺率が比較的低い国（アルゼンチン、英国、スペインなど）の人たちと話していて思うのは、彼らにはそのような価値観が全く理解出来ないだろうなということだ。彼らの世界は自分中心で作られており、どんなことがあってもそのせいで「自分自身の価値自体が喪失」したとまでは考えない。平たく言えば、だいたい他人か社会のせいにして、「おれ、悪くないから」で済ます。

またそれに付随することとして、日本人と議論して相手の意見に異を唱えると、とかく彼らは感情的になる。あたかも自分の存在が否定されたかのように感じるらしい。外国人との議論では前提となるのは「各自が違う意見を持っていることが当たり前」ということだ。だから、反対意見を言ったところでそこまで感情的にこじれることはない。
